Roses have a restorative effect from the inside out and we are drawn to their breathtaking magic.

The Spiritual History:

Red roses historically and traditionally symbolize love, affection, desire, romance. They also have immense value medicinally and cosmetically. I believe that we can sense these benefits they kindly bestow on us which attracts us to them, making us want to offer them as gifts as well as partake of their healing properties.

The rose holds high spiritual significance in various religions. The word Rosary, a string of beads to count prayers in the Catholic faith, is from the Latin ‘rosarium’ meaning a garland of roses/rose garden. The Rose was one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary.

In Greek mythology, the red rose is linked to the Goddess Aphrodite, Goddess of Love.  She was running to the aid of her lover, Adonis, but cut herself on a rose bush turning the white petals into red with her blood.  Her tears fall into the pools of blood as she weeps over his dead body, filling the rose with love.

Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, bathed in rose water combined with honey, lavender and milk, regarding it as her beauty secret. She was a symbol of women’s power, characterized by political tact, and adaptability.  She successfully maneuvered a predominantly male domain with striking aptitude. All this responsibility and she still made time for her beloved bath – maybe it was the rejuvenation she needed to forge forward.

According to Hinduism, Brahma (Creator of the World) favoured the Lotus and Vishnu (Preserver of the World) favoured the Rose. Vishnu showed Brahma his celestial rose-laden garden. Enthralled by the rose’s beauty, Brahma accepted the rose as the most beautiful flower.   Rose extracts are used in ‘attar’ a perfume offered in puja as well as incense sticks and essential oils. Since each God represents various colours, a flower’s colour denotes which God is offered a particular flower. Red is the colour of shakti (power and strength) and Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, governs the red muladhara chakra (Root) representing stability and survival.

The healing benefits

According to Healthline, “Besides smelling heavenly, rose water mist has some powerful relaxing effects on our body. One study in 2016 Trusted Study*  found that inhaling rose water reduced anxiety, in patients undergoing medical procedures. This is likely due to the olfactory sensation (sense of smell) sending calming signals to the brain.”

Rose water is a flavoured water made by steeping rose petals in water. The versatility of rose water makes it suitable for people who fall into any of the three doshas in Ayurveda, providing benefits to all skin types. Rose water can soothe a fiery pitta dosha and also balance Vata and Kapha.  When applied to the skin, rose water balances the skin’s pH by hydrating and reducing irritation from skin conditions such as eczema, acne and rosacea. It purifies the skin, heals sunburns and wounds, stimulates skin circulation and reduces broken capillaries promoting a radiant healthy glow.

The antioxidants in rose water protect the cells in the skin against damage** , as well as acting as an anti-aging product by reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles by inhibiting elastase and collegians.

So I believe this is something we are all entitled to enjoy, indulging in a rose water bath with a few drops of lavender, especially after a long, trying day.

Revive with Rose Magic

Captivated by the crimson passion of roses,
Immersed in the soft purity of their silent poses,
I am floating in the fragrant love they emit,
Into the depths of age-old mystery I submit.

I ponder why they are timelessly sought,
What benefits and value they have brought,
Sharing healing vibration offered to all,
Natural remedies on which to safely call.

Melting into a rose’s enchanting scent,
Relaxes and refreshes when I feel spent,
Charmed by its intriguing hushed mystique,
Eternally revered by all as sacredly unique.

A flower so versatile with a treasure box of gifts,
Nourishing teas from petals and rosehips uplifts,
Rejuvenating skin care promotes soothing healing,
Aromatic incense and oils evoke pacified feeling.

The resplendent rose is a cherished blessing,
Bathe in its sweetness with facial caressing,
Soak up its sensual yet delicate prescence,
Heartily absorb its divine energetic essence.
