Why I Choose to Educate, Not Dictate

When I first started working in wellness, I thought people wanted the answers: the “do this, don’t do that” kind of advice. And in a way, they did. Clients would come in and say things like, “Just tell me what to do and I’ll follow it.” For a little while, it worked. They would go home, follow the meal plan or try the daily routine I suggested. But eventually, I started to notice a pattern—the changes didn’t last. They would slip back into old habits, or come back feeling frustrated that nothing had really shifted. That’s when I realized something important: when you don’t understand why you’re doing something, it’s almost impossible to stick with it. It’s the difference between brushing your teeth because someone told you to, versus brushing because you understand how it keeps your mouth healthy and prevents pain.
